About Us

Our Firm History

Heban, Murphree & Lewandowski, LLC was built on the idea that clients should not have to choose between the experience of a large law firm and the personal attention of a smaller one. Since its founding, the firm has continued to grow while staying committed to that balance.

2010

Kevin Heban, Gary Sommer, and Kent Murphree formed Heban, Sommer & Murphree, establishing a firm focused on experience, responsiveness, and personal service.

Growth & Expansion

John Lewandowski joined the firm, strengthening its probate and estate litigation practice. Phil Davis and Gina Wasserman followed, bringing additional depth in municipal and criminal law.

2015 – 2018

John Lewandowski was elevated to Partner in 2015. In 2018, the firm became Heban, Murphree & Lewandowski, LLC, honoring its history while establishing a name built for the future.

2022 – Present

Jon Balcerzak joined the firm in 2022 and was elevated to Partner in 2025, further strengthening leadership and the firm’s focus on probate and estate law.

Today, the firm continues to build on that foundation by combining deep legal experience with the kind of attentive, client-focused service that remains central to its identity.

Kevin Heban

Attorney

Kevin concentrates in the practice areas of probate and estate litigation, estate and trust administration and preparation, real estate, general civil litigation, and municipal law. He graduated from the University of Toledo in 1982 with dual Bachelors Degrees in Economics and Political Science.

Attorney

Kent focuses his practice in the areas of general civil litigation, probate, and estate litigation, labor and employment law, and construction law. He is licensed to practice in the States of Ohio and Michigan and is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio, Eastern District of Michigan.

Attorney

John’s practice is devoted exclusively to probate litigation and inheritance disputes. John is licensed to practice law in Ohio and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and the Eastern District of Michigan. John has argued cases in front of United States District Court Judges, Ohio Appellate Courts, and the Ohio Supreme Court.

Jon joined the firm in 2022 and became a partner in 2025. A former public defender, he brings strong trial experience and a practical, results-driven approach to estate and business law.

Gina’s practice is devoted to civil matters, primarily probate and estate litigation, estate and trust administration, and general litigation. Gina has significant trial experience stemming from her years of courtroom practice.

Troy M. Ery

Paralegal

Troy earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 2010 from Toledo. Following graduation, he worked at a local school district for several years before joining the legal profession in 2017.

Mary Brownell

Paralegal

Mary obtained a journalism degree at Bowling Green State University and a post-baccalaureate certificate in Paralegal Studies at The University of Toledo. She spent 10-years in the corporate legal department of HCR ManorCare before joining HML in 2017.

Karla Durco

Office Manager

As the office manager, Karla Durco holds a crucial position at Heban, Murphree & Lewandowski, LLC, where she supervises administrative operations and ensures the seamless operation of the office.

Ashley Pool

Legal Assistant

Ashley joined HML in 2024 and manages the firm’s finances. She also supports the legal team with file submissions and estate plan drafting. Originally from California, Ashley holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Science and previously taught high school science. Now living in Toledo with her husband and son, she’s working toward a career as a paralegal.
